The hands behind every thread
Behind every Tarsh piece is a skilled artisan, most of them women who learned Madhubani in childhood, seated beside their mothers and grandmothers.
Today, Tarsh works with 15 artisan families in and around Muzaffarpur, Bihar. For many of these women, it is the first time their work has been sold directly, with their name attached and a fair share of the price in their hands. When you buy from Tarsh, a meaningful portion of every rupee goes straight back to the artist's household.

My mother painted on the walls of our home. Her mother did too. I paint on cloth now, so that the world outside Bihar can carry our walls with them.
She has been practising Madhubani since the age of seven, learning by watching, then doing. She paints each piece on the floor of her home in natural light and can complete a full kurta in four days. Her signature motif is the matsya (fish) pair, "two people who always find their way back to each other."
